Hiff 38 On An 82

I've not long changed the headgasket on my mini. Before doing so I'd arsed about with the carb to try and fix a misfire. The headgasket fixed the misfire but now it's all back together my carb is completely up the spout. It idles at around 1800 revs and cuts out if I try to get the idle down with the idle mixture screw.
It's a hiff 38 and so the Haynes only refers to it being on a 92 1275 car which is making it hard for me to try and find instructions on how to set it up correctly. No idea why I've got a hiff 38 but someone obviously thought it was a good idea within the last 30 odd years.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

They were standard kit on 998 Metros.
Some simple things to eliminate first...
Is there a little bit of slack in the throttle & choke cables, so they're not setting the idle instead of the idle screws?
Are you sure there are no air leaks down stream of the carb?
The mixture and idle screws are separate things. You won't get a good idle if the mixture is mucked up, but that isn't your issue if it just won't go under 1800 revs and isn't stalling.

ML Motorsport tuning day with AC Dodd is next Saturday.
If you could get the car up there you could get them to set it up
