Hi folks,

My mini has 2 areas of the paintwork that really draw attention and I'm hoping to get them sorted but I'm not sure how big a job and more importantly roughly how expensive it will be? I have no bodywork/paint experience other than light tiny patch ups and the car is metallic so I won't be attempting it myself.

One area is a 'repair' done by the previous owner where the paint doesn't blend in properly...(it looks like a patch has been cut out but it hasn't, the paint is just that bad!)

And the other is just under the petrol cap where I guess the paint has just worn...

What are my options if on a budget? Even if just to improve the overall look particularly the paint blend on the wing.

Thanks for any tips.

Hi,

The first photo looks like a rust repair around where the original repeater  lamp hole was and it seems as though they just welded a square patch on and slapped some paint on. At the very edge of this photo you can also see some rust bubbling up near the windscreen scuttle.

The best option here would be a new wing, and possibly a scuttle end at the very least.

The 2nd photo is the clear-coat lacquer coming off, you can also see it peeling way around the light cluster. A strip back and re-spray of the quarter panel would be the best bet here, assuming the lower section of it where it meets the sill and boot lid hinge panel is ok.

Hope this helps. There are loads of people on here who are much better versed in bodywork though and hopefully someone will be along later with better advice.

Cheers, Steve.

Thanks for your reply! Ooosh...that sounds a bit pricey right now.
It does 100% look like a patch but it is definitely 100% an entire original wing, it's just weird paint marks.
My mate suggested to me that the wing 'repair' looks like it doesn't have any kind of clear coat or lacquer on it, that's why it stands out so badly. I know it might only improve it marginally but if I cleaned it up and put a clear coat on it, would it improve it...even slightly?

I still reckon it's a poorly welded patch that hasn't been ground down flat and smoothed into the original wing.

Just lacquering over it won't really improve it much but it's your choice if you just want to make it look a bit better. It all depends on your available funds!

Cheers, Steve.
