Are they universal or bespoke to each gearbox?

They are matched to the box.

So if there is a crack on the diff cover is the box scrap?

I certainly wouldn't go swapping diff casings over, you might get away with it, but it's not the right way to go about it unfortunately. Depending on how bad the crack is, it could be repaired. Might be easier to buy another casing and rebuild it while it's out.

As Stiggyloo has said, the caps are matched to the rest of the case, however if you have some caps to try, you might get lucky. Ditch the dowels as the bearings will well be enough for location as will the side covers, keeping in mind that the rod for the shiftier also needs to be on location too, or it'll leak oil.

I've matched up a few by doing some re-machining to the caps, but I would think that cases with matching caps shouldn't be too hard to find in the UK if you can't find a suitable cap.

Try fitting the diff cover and using your nail to run over the gasket face from one to the other (across the gasket interface) see if you can find one that has no steps, the finger nail test will be able to highlight 5 tenths (0.0005" or 12 microns) approx which is good enough, now torque up the cover to case and check the diameter of the bore where the diff bearing fits, whilst I agree with the sentiment that this is not ideal, it has worked ok in the past, and I will guarantee that bigger names have also got away with swapping diff covers without having any adverse effects.
