Hi,

when decelerating there is a loud knocking around the gear selector.

So far changed  the solid front subframe mounts, top engine steady with new bushes and fitted a lower engine steady.

If i try moving the engine by hand, won't move at all.

Any ideas would be welcome because i can't figure it out.

Maybe the gear selector body is moving due to worn bushes? Does the exhaust run close to anything?

I might take it out and give it a clean as is dirty.

I had this it was the exhaust box hitting the seatbelt bolts that go through the floor, worth a look although may not be what is causing your noise

2 cotton reel type rubber mounts that have 1/2 inch nuts up through the floorpan. More likely exhaust though

Removed the seatbelt bolts and the carpets to have a clear view of the gear selector while driving.

Also the exhaust only touches the corner of the lower bracket on the engine, but is tight, so much that has a dent.  I will try to move it.

The noise is still there and can't see any movement in the the gear selector when it happens.

Is more like and impact rather then a knock knock, feels like the whole car moves when decelerating.

Can you reproduce the noise stationary while putting the car in reverse and letting the clutch partly up (handbrake on)?

Look at the engine/subtrame mounts while someone does this for you. Also if you reproduce the knock its easier to locate with a few mates round to pinpoint it

Top engine steady is a favorite.

Grap the top of the block and see if you can rock it forwards and back.

Might not be the full problem but mine was running a little rich and on deceleration especially down hills with foot off the throttle it would lurch and you could hear the engine steady pulling against the crossmember.
when you say it feels like the whole car moves when decellerating, this is exactly what I was experiencing.
It made all the clunks and thumps go away once the mixture was right and the car was decellerating smoothly.

Just a thought.

Was there ever a solution to this? I fear there may be something wrong with my new purchase and I am trying to figure it out... this sounds very similar to what I am experiencing.

True, I am just trying to figure out the best place to start. I have some symptoms and I am seeing what matches and doesn't... Was reading through this one and was just curious if he ever figured it out.
