Hi;

I am refurbishing my wings as part of my restoration. The car had an aerial mounted in the top of the wing and I was wondering if I should weld the hole up.

Before I do I probably wont be re-fitting the old radio as I will either be fitting a more up to date one and will also be fitting a CarPC Media Centre.

Question:

1. Do modern FM radios still use a standard aerial, if so what alternatives are there than sticking with the hole in the wing.

2. If I fit a DAB radio what aerials do they use and where would this fit on my classic mini?

Would be best on the roof to minimise corrosion. You can get dab aerials that fit inside the window though but not sure how good they are

My mk2 had a hole near front of roof and an aerial mounted with cable down the pillar, I have now welded it up as don't want a radio.

Best position is centre of roof, front edge is ok, as would be rear edge where a shark fin might go. But shark fins are nowhere near as good as whips. All limited by the laws of physics. A front edge of roof antenna will, contrary to intuition, actually pick up signals from the rear more effectively than from the front.

The front wing is a very mediocre place, rather near to the source of ignition noise, and with patchy reception in various directions. But it is easy to get a retractable antenna in there.
