Got in the pickup this morning and started ok.Stopped at a friends house and it wouldn't start.Sounds like the starter motor is turning over but then a horrible drone.Battery is fully charged and new earth leads and solenoid last year.Any ideas?

Is/was the car turning over at normal speed on the starter?

Battery is new six months old and starter turns over, but then makes a horrible noise as though theres no power getting to it

is the noise a machine gun noise, a groaning noise, or a whining noise?

A quick check would be to put the gearbox in neutral and switch on the ignition.  Take an insulated tool like a short screwdriver and bridge the two threaded metal posts on the starter solenoid.  There will be sparks so don't panic.  If the starter motor turns over normally, the problem making the weird noise is probably the solenoid itself.
