Hi there, I accidentally mushroomed my drive shaft while hitting it out of the hub, and now the hub nut won't go on - any ideas?

Kind Regards
George

As above or if it is only slight and at the tip of the thread you could try gently filing the damage out.

How much is damaged? If just on the end, you may be able to file the very end of it. So long as there's still thread visible after winding on the castle nut then it should be ok.

Redruby beat me to it!

Try a thread file first.

Next time, if you use a brass drift it will keep this from happening, the bras is softer than the steel but still strong enough to bash the shaft out of the hub.

It's only a little at the end still would be some thread on the other side of the locking pin hole.

Your statement above tells me you need to throw it away, the end to the "pin" hole is a fair way, if mushrooming has gone this far then the rest of the threaded section will have damage, most likely it will be tapered, not something a thread file will fix.

But I guess anything can be bodged...

I managed to file it and this is how it looks now - any thoughts? Goes on and off fine.

It looks like you have enough thread, good luck, hope it all works well for you.  Just keep your eye on it over the next few hundred miles to be on the safe side.  Although if it came loose you should feel it in the way it drives.

Tighten it properly and put a new cotter pin in it, should be fine.

Tightened and put the pin in - tested the car down our lane and it seems good going for a short test drive on a flat wide road in a bit ;)
