When you turn the key to ignition 2, do you hear any relay clicking at all? Have you checked all fuses?

Could be a broken or non-earthing earth strap?

It sounds like the ignition switch part of the lock assembly has failed. Not unusual. Check for a 12v signal from the switch when the key is moved to the 'start' position. If no output a new ignition switch assembly is needed, or replace with a push-button start which is easy, cheap and you get to keep the original ignition key.

If it is the switch, which as Steve says you need a multi-meter to check, you can simply fit a push button. Run a lead from the ignition 'on' circuit to the new button and connect the 'start' lead from the ignition switch to the other side of the new button and it will all be fine again. A very simple and very low-cost mod which, some say, is better than the switch and certainly more reliable.
