Obviously check the system from start to finish for leaks. Check that the fuel tank vent pipe (from top of tank to floor) hasn't split as they like to do that and has the one way valve fitted.

It's not running rich is it?

Not leaking out of overflow pipe?

I have exactly the same symptoms with my mini at the moment and pretty sure it's because it's too rich.
I can only smell it when I open the window and after a bit of a run.

Edit: I had my carb rebuilt last month and it's since then I have started to smell it but that could be because I never had the window open much in winter!

I also had a strong petrol smell in my 1995 Sidewalk, I checked everything pipes gaskets but still the smell and I could not see any leaks. In the end I changed the tank over for another one. When I removed the tank half way up the side which would have been under the filler hole and down to the bottom the paint had all flaked off, so something was leaking, I found what can only be described as a centre punch but not a hole I cleaned off the paint, removed the pump and filled the tank with water to the brim of the pump hole, checked it an hour later still full. Next day I checked it still looked full but from where the centre punch mark was to the botom of the tank was a streak of rust as the water had been seeping through the punch mark. I would have been searching for a month of sundays and would never had found that leak.

Heres a couple of photos to show you what I mean there is no obvious leak, but you can see the route it was taking.

Just because the mixture is ok at idle, doesn't necessarily mean it won't be really rich at the top end. But it does sound like your problem lies elsewhere.
