No Spark.

Best Answer dklawson , 18 May 2016 - 08:08 PM

I have a

65dm4 electronic dizzy & lucas sports coil.

I've wired the coil 12V to + and - to earth

I've wired the distributor black white to earth via the coil & the white to the 12V on the coil

First, the factory electronic ignition should not be used with anything other than a factory type electronic ignition coil.  Others can provide you the part number.  Using a regular coil with the module it will cause the module to fail over a fairly short time.

The coil does not get a direct connection to earth.  The coil gets its earth connection through the electronic ignition module.  There will be two wires on coil (+) (one from the ignition switch, one for the ignition module).  There will be one wire on coil (-) which goes to the module.  IF you have a tachometer, it will have its sense wire also connected to coil (-).

Hi Guys,

me again...

Trying to get my project running so i thought i'd establish spark as its the only thing missing.

I have a

65dm4 electronic dizzy & lucas sports coil.

I've wired the coil 12V to + and - to earth

I've wired the distributor black white to earth via the coil & the white to the 12V on the coil

the 65DM4 has a new cap, rotor arm, spark plugs & leads.

Stuck the timing light on and nothing.

Stuck the spark plug against the earth (threaded body to visually check for spark) and still nothing.

The coils getting hot so safe to assume its working.

First off, does anything sound amiss? have i made a silly mistake somewhere?

Ive taken the dizzy cap off and visually seen the rotor arm spinning around and you can see in the centre where the coil connection has been made.

If i've not done something obvious then is there a way of checking the module on the side of the dizzy? Its been sat a little while but was working when it came off the last mini.

thanks guys,

Chris

Ah okay,
Should've looked at the drawing a bit closer. Don't have the ignition switch etc was just cobbling something together to get the thing running. Prove the engine before moving on with the rest of the car.

What difference does the coil make to the module? More out of interest than anything I have the standard one buried somewhere so I'll stick in on and see if it sorts it if I haven't already ruined the module.

Is there a way of proving the module at all?

Many thanks
Chris

As above, don't connect the coil to earth, this is probably why you have no spark. It is the trigger for the coil to send it's spark.
I haven't looked myself but i dare say one of the techies on here has done a circuit for it. It should be switched live to positive on coil and negative to dizzy. The dizzy breaks and makes the earth signal to the coil thus creating a spark. (hopefully this link works)

That was my immobiliser circuit ... Coil side Via a hidden toggle switch to earth. No startee!
