Cleco pins. For positioning panels being spot welded / plug welded

Power file belt sander for grinding down welds in awkward areas. Silverline prepared over B&D.

Die Grinder bits. Also for grinding down welds in awkward areas but these fit in a drill

A proper dust mask to keep grinding dust out of your lungs.

Fire retardant overalls when welding

Lots of practice on steel off cuts

Lots of patience - not always readily available

Thanks for the fast replies.

I see there are a few bits I've missed. Can anyone recommend me a dust mask please?

Proper welding gauntlets are a must. Cheap ones from Machine Mart are only £4.

ear defenders can also stop sparks getting in the ear - painful

old leather jacket put on back to front when welding upside down

something to lay on / kneel on & a rag in water to put out under seal fires

bright directional light that can be clamped near welding site , so you can see with mask down before striking up

a place to store flammable's , out of the way of welding

- IMPORTANT - someone else near the garage incase something bad happens - don't rely on a mobile somewhere in the garage

my neighbour was working on a pickup in a garage next door to me

he knocked it off axle stands while jacking it up to get it higher , broke his collar bone & slight crush injury , but was pinned under car for a while

mobile was on table at other end of garage , everyone was at work so no one to help , think he cause himself more damage dragging his self out

Top tip on the welding gauntlets there......

Fire retardant overalls needn't be expensive. I've picked my last 2 pairs up at shows for £20 or less. They will hold back welding spatter but don't expect them to stop a big ball of molten metal if you're welding from underneath. Most of the welding masks don't cover the top of the head. A welder's cap can stop spatter from stinging your scalp.

Good thread, I'm about to embark on a weldathon and that list is handy. Good luck.
