Poor Brake Performance

Hi All,

 

After removing the single-line servo from my Mini and bleeding the brakes, I have a lot firmer pedal now. 

The only issue is the brakes are not that good. I must admit I've got used to modern brakes and their over servo assistance, but even with that they still seem poor. 

 

I did forget to remove the grease from the discs before I took it out for a spin, but quickly returned home to degrease the discs, but I reckon I've contaminated the pads and maybe that's the reason the brakes are poor.

 

I'm looking at a set of Mintex M1144 pads as I've heard these are very good from cold and don't fade when hot, but the Minispares website state these are only for competition use, so will they be any good on a road car? 

 

Any advice welcome,

M1144 are competition pads so not for road use as they will not be good for initial bite. Just stick with OE fitted pads ( AP Lockheed ) for road used and you wont go wrong.

I fitted EBC greenstuff to my Rover cooper once and the initial bite was very poor but 90-0 was excellent, comp pads will be the same sort of thing so not much fun around town etc.

Remember the new pads will need to gradually bed in to became efficient so you wont get a good brake out of the box but I imagine your pads are contaminated.

Your pads are almost certainly embedded with grease now.
Mintex 1144 are excellent for road and mild competition use. For aggressive comp use, e.g. full on historic rallies the Mintex 1166 or 1177 are much better.
But the 1144 works well for cold and is very good. Fit a set and you will be delighted, but make absolute certain there is no residual oil or grease on the discs.

My old pads were horrendous! Would've been better sticking my foot out the door! I've fitted a set of M1144's and have only tried them going back and forth on the drive so looking forward to the drive to the MOT station and seeing how they perform once they've had a little bedding in.

1144's are an amazing fast road pad. Lots of brake dust though.

If you have 7.5" discs with 'S' callipers the best pads are the carbon-metallic ones as sold by Mini Spares.

Having two cars without servos after spending a small fortune on different brake pads i came to the conclusion that the OE AP Lockheed pads where the best all round pad for me.

I should not have commented on a pad I personally haven`t used, comparing it to Greenstuff which were awful until warm.

Reading a post from first hand experience could you please share your experience in detail.

If there is lots of brake dust they must be nice and soft so what are they like from stone cold eg rolling down a drive at 5 mph ?

Are they an every day pad for a steady driver that wont go over 50 mph ?

Is there a need to press the brake pedal harder when using this pad ?

What do you think is the reason behind MS stating competition only,  high wear perhaps ? 

The answers to the original question all seem to be biased towards fast driving or racing so it would be interesting to hear if the pad is suitable for real world town driving when you are unlikely to go over 40 mph.

If one is not going to be driving quickly then standard OE quality pads are fine.
For faster driving including mild competition the 1144 is a great pad. It works fine with a good low-temp coefficient of friction.
I tried the 1144 in a Rover 214Si rally car and they were simply not up to the job. With the 1177 pads it was great.
