Brake System Drain

Hello all,

 

I am currently stripping down a 1998 MPI and I now need to take out the brake servo. This involves draining the brake fluid. what is the best way of doing this? I find the Haynes manual a bit vague on the process.

Remove the cap and open the bleed nipple on the front right calliper. You can do a few pumps to remove some of the main amount, the rest will gravity drain.

No, there will always be fluid trapped at low points. If you need it all out and have an Eezibleed, fit that with the bottle empty, and open each nipple in turn until only air is coming out.

If you are doing this to get rid of contamination the only way is to renew all pipes and hoses (Kunifer and Goodridge are sensible upgrades for minimal extra cost) and strip and rebuild all cylinders, as there really is no other way of getting dirt out. But, as I suspect in this case, you just don't want fluid dripping when you disconnect things, the blow through with air should do a good enough job, but some residual drips may remain.

If you are only doing this to safely install/replace a servo, just drain the system as Steve suggested.  That will leave the other brakes lines full of fluid.  That in turn will make bleeding the system easier once the new servo is installed.  Avoid blowing through the lines to all four wheels if you don't have to.  Once the servo is installed you will need to bleed the whole system anyway.  Bleeding a system that has only air in it can be time consuming and frustrating if things don't go well.
