Hello!

I recently started getting some clutch pedal fade on my 94 Mayfair SPI. I was having to pump the clutch because it was catching really quick and there was hardly any clutch resistance.

I replaced the slave last year and today I replaced the clutch master cylinder, I bled the system and after 15 minutes of driving the problem is returning. The clutch catch point is sporadic and inconsistent.

Is there air in the line and that's why it only shows up when warm? I hope it's not the clutch :(

Anyone had similar issues? Any ideas?

thanks

Rob

I would check the system for leaks again, especially the slave. Sadly we can no longer rely on something being new as a guarantee it will work

This also tends to point towards a failing clutch release bearing or even a crankshaft end float problem.

I would suggest checking the end float first. If that is ok you then have peace of mind, knowing that it is not going to be a major engine out job.

Then check clutch lever travel, hot. Does it creep back when the pedal is held down? If so, master or slave seals or leaky pipework, which should be obvious. If it always manages the full operating stroke, look for trouble at the lever bottom end such as worn pin or ball end, and be prepared to remove the clutch cover, check that it is not cracked, and the plunger and release bearing are good.

I had a very similar issue, if i wasn't changing gear all of the time the clutch would fade and id be sat in traffic just pumping the clutch.

I replaced the slave and master cylinder and still no success... as per usual tmf usually provides the worst case scenario answers.

Turned out to be the rubber hose between the master cylinder and slave cylinder. There wasn't any visual leaks, no splits etc which is why i didn't think of it...

For the sake of a few quid i replaced it and its been fine ever since, the rubber had perished on the underside of the bend (hence why i didn't see it) and it wasn't perished enough to drop fluid but enough to loose pressure/ breathe a little.

Hope your fix is as easy as mine.
