As per the title, I noticed my tail lights are on even when the switch is off.
Any ideas?

It's a '94 Sprite.

Does this happen with the ignition off? (taking a feed from a faulty brake switch?)

Happens when key is in ignition & turned to position 1. Engine not running.
When key is removed, it they turn off.

Unplug the switch and see if they go off....indicates faulty switch if they do

Where's the switch located?
I'll try it later tonight.

Found the switch, unplugged one of the connectors & the the tail lights turn off!

Thanks for the help!
I'll order a new brake switch.

It might just need adjusting.

Ah some confusion, you originally said tail lights, not brake lights. Actually the same applies but as Ethel said, the brake light is adjustable. The rocker light switch is throw awayble ;o)

So if I adjust the brake light switch will it turn the tail lights off?
Or do I need a new rocker light switch?

Do you have a hydraulic brake light switch, or a mechanical one in the pedal area? The hydraulic switch, maybe only early cars, is throw - away, some but not all mechanical ones are adjustable. Hopefully yours is. The switch should be pressed only when the pedal is fully up. You will see what I mean when you get down there for a look. Fortunately it is nowhere near as bad as the clevis pin in that area!

It is the mechanical switch on the brake pedal.
I'll have look later today to see if I can adjust it.

I've ordered a new one anyway, just in case. They're only a few quid.

If unplugging the brake light switch cured it, I'd expect that was the issue. It could look like tail lights if it was barely making contact, increasing the resistance - a new switch may be wise as that'd eat the contacts. If it was the tail lights, you'd expect the number plate and side lights to come on too.

The position of the brake switch has been adjusted & all is fine now.
The lights turn on when the pedal is pressed.... As it's supposed to! ;)
