Hi guys just finished rebuilding a 63 850 have a few teething problems First is over heating not sure on the condition of the radiator so I've got a new one and pump so hope fully that's that sorted ? Second burning oil quite a bit to be honest so I'm thinking head gasket and stem o rings ? I'll get head made to unleaded while its out?? And third tin rattle from timing cover no idea here need a new chain or upgrade there is no tensioner like newer versions so ??? Any sugestions or help even if you think I'm doing it right or not most welcome thanks kev :)

Kev,

For overheating would check that the temp sender in the head and the gauge are reading correctly. There are different senders.

For reducing oil consumption fit the later 'top hat' type seals which go over the top of the valve guides to both inlet and exhausts. These are much more effective than the o-ring seals.

For timing rattle a new chain will help. Also there may be rubber rings fitted to the large pulley, these should be replaced as they will harden with age.

Unless you're planning on doing more than 5,000 miles a year would suggest leaving head alone and use Castrol Valvemaster.

A new simplex chain on the original pulleys should work fine.

The IWIS single row chain is generally reckoned to be one the best quality chains currently available, available from Keith Calver: http://www.calverst....-super-quality/
