Hi there so I finally got the newly installed engine started and it ran ok for around an hour and then dropped to two cylinders whilst overheating and then after a fiddle with the dizzy went back to 3... Any ideas?

Kind Regards
George

well I had roughly adjusted timing as I don't have a stroboscope, and I thought it was rich but I don't know. Yes the dizzy has points. How do I set up the dizzy properly?

George

First off is to get it running on all four so double check the points, rotor arm, rotor cap and leads. Make sure you are getting a good spark on all of the plugs.

Then if you can get it started again run it up to temp and swing the dizzy until the engine revs freely. This is as basic as it gets. If the engine is modified then ideally it's needs to beset up on a rolling road.

There is a mixture screw on the carb but setting these up is not my forte, however there are other peeps on here like Shifty who can help better.

What's the history of the engine?
I would check your plumbing if it's overheating
Have you checked your valve clearances?
and maybe look at a compression test

Is it just a newly installed engine or a fully rebuilt engine?

How badly did it overheat? Have you cooked the gasket?

The engine is just newly installed not rebuilt. I set all the tappets to 12 thou when cold. The engine was hot but I turned it off before it actually overheated, however I'm going to run a compression test just to be on the safe side. It's completely stock or at least that is what I was told. The block looked fine when I installed it - good bored no scoring it doesn't burn oil and there wasn't any cracks between cylinders.

Just checked compression

No 1 150
No 2 105
No 3 105
No 4 150

As you can see it looks like I have a gasket failure between cylinders 2&3 and since I tried to re-use the gasket from the previous engine foolishly I think this may be the cause.

Mine is purple, but I have been told that's normal

Hopefully that's the cause and it's a relatively cheap fix.

Good luck

Fingers crossed - I reckon about a 3-4 hour job all round, done this before on my previous engine.

Kind Regards

Head gasket looks like a strong contender for sure

If you reused a gasket it's for sure what's the issue
