Hello All,

I've finally gotten around to taking some pics of the engine bay and thought I would share what appears to be a stage one motor. The filter is an HKS and the headers appear to be wrapped.

Any other observations I may have missed?

Cheers!

I didn't realize that HKS made a kit for the Mini.

Has the manifold and exhaust been changed?

Stage 1 involves an LCB manifold and an aftermarket cat back exhaust

HKS don't make a kit for the mini. It's their standard mushroom filter with an adaptor. Very easy to do :)

It has a full exhaust manifold (wrapped) and a center mounted exhaust. The previous (1st) owner of the car did not skimp on kit, that's for sure.

Any thoughts on replacing the fuel trap and the hoses, given the unknown history? Any suggestions on where to buy?

I'd say it has a stage 1 kit on it then.

Entirely up to you.. If it's running well with no vacuum leaks etc. then i wouldn't

If you wanted to replace them, take a look at minispares.com

Define well :)

The idle is definitely rough but gets a bit smoother once the car warms up. By no means would I call it a smooth or refined idle.

I can say that HKS is right up there with K&N in terms of reputation of air filtration capability. It looks ALOT better at the end of a cold air intake, yes.

K&N are far superior. The foam in the HKS's break down over time and get sucked into the engine. I had one on my first Evo 6 and found it to be susceptible to heat soak. I put on a large K&N cone on instead and made an extra 10bhp over most of the rev range. Don't get me wrong, their flow capability is immense, just not great as an overall product. Plus they're overpriced.

Sounds like we've had similar experiences. I've had K&N drop in filters melt inside my filter housing.

Given that I didn't pay for this one (came with the car), I'll keep it in there till I revert back to the stock housing.

Stock housing with K &N insert, replace all vacuum pipes and fuel trap. Service inc fuel filter.
That's what I always do with my new purchases ;D
I had an HKS downpipe on mine and a kind of cherry bomb silencer, changed silencer for RC40 rear box type. HKS changed when flex joint broke but kept for repair as much better than stock.
Unless you have diagnostic reader, fuel pressure measuring kit and CO meter I would replace the service items assuming the worst (vacuum pipes and fuel trap are service items and account for the highest percentage of issues on SPi running conditions).
Also worth reverse flushing the radiator and checking temperature gauge reaches the white spot just below N when warmed up.

I recently saw a "stock" air filter housing with a S works logo on it. Were these different in any way?
