I've just fitted a new head gasket and a rebuilt head and valve train on my '84 sedan and I have a question about the new rocker arms I have.  When I first slackened all the valve adjusting screws in preparation of setting each valve,  one rocker arm remained in contact with its valve spring. Once I backed that screw all the way out there still remained only about 15 thousands of an inch clearance while all the other rockers had large amounts of u[p/down movement.  Does this indicate some sort or problem with this new rocker and screw set? Or can I go ahead and adjust the valves to their required gap?  I tried to remove the screw and replace it with a new spare to see if I could gain some clearance but it won't come out.

So you have not seen what your clearances are yet?

A cam is not round and neither the same so everything will be different.

turn the engine - it will go slack

you need to use the rule of 9 on an a series engine

this is for an inline engine - but is exactly the same as the mini

as it sounds like you are new to this - I suggest you do a couple of complete engine turns before attempting to start

to make sure no interference in the valve / piston area

best of luck

That's normal and I'd be worried if it didn't do that. Thank about how the valve train moves with engine rotation.

Time to show one more bit of ignorance.  How do you start setting valves using the Rule of Nine method when you've changed everything in the valve chain and all the rocker arms are free moving and all the valves are closed?

Preset each valve rocker in the static condition, then turn the engine and at the same time find the slack rockers adjust each in turn as they become slack, you will then find one that "bottoms out" and 9 - that rocker no. = the one to adjust so do it once then run a full check to make sure and all should be well
