After rebuilding my 998 engine and box i have just put in the pot joints into the diff. i have tried turning them but they seem too stiff. I have refurbed the diff and box putting new bronze bush and bearings in the diff including new pin.i feel that something is wrong , the o/s one will turn with alot of effort , however , the n/s i have to use some large pipe grips to turn it, it also seenms to ave a tighter spot during turning, Has anyone else come across this. I am a bit reluctant to put the engine back in at the moment.

Acidently fitted 2 fibre washers on the output shaft instead of 1 ( forgot to remove the old one.
Hope this helps

If you pop the tight pot joint off and put it on just enough to engage the splines (but not slip in to the bush), how hard is it to spin then?

the diff is standard, just renewed all the worn stuff and fitted new bearings and bushes , when i pull the pot cv joints out a bit it does get easier to turn them , i am hoping it just wants bedding in.

New Pot Joints too?
Some of these are ever so slightly over-size.
Also, with the bushes, just to check you are aware they are finished to size after fitting? Put another way, they are undersized when purchased.

When you rebuilt the diff
how did it feel then, I imagine that you spun it round a few times to see if it felt stiff or smooth
sometimes the new washer is thicker than the one you take out making it stiff
I learned that from Solis' Mini video
by the way what diff ratio are your running ?

I don,t know what ratio the diff is , whatever is standard on a 998. I am sure that i reamed out the new bushes out to size , i may have to take one of the end plates off and check.

Trial fit the end cover on the Pot Joint before fitting them on the gearbox.

I had this problem with a new set myself, near side was ok, but off side bound up in bushing. Had to polish a fraction off the pot joint.
Try with your old ones 1st.
