I wonder if someone can help.

We bought a 1275 SPi at the weekend and it came with the attached certificate and a floor plate on the carpet.

I have looked on google but it all seems to relate to current conversions.

Can anyone point me in the direction of what this is all about please.

Thanks

Mike

Have a look at this site: http://www.minipassi...s/brochures.htm

It has many brochures listed, including the John Cooper ones. E.g. http://www.minipassi...Cooper 1992.pdf

it seems that you have this kit fitted https://www.minispor...rsion-8962.html

- it is a tuning kit made by mini sport and backed by the cooper name, expensive but it gives the car authenticity I guess

I wouldnt be so sure.  If that certificate has the original JC signature rather than a printed copy, its likely to be an original conversion.  Much more sought after than the rebranded MiniSport stuff...

It's an original conversion, noting to do with the mini sport overpriced tat.
Someone spent a lot of money on your mini in the past.

Yes, along with a few other bits, probably has a better manifold and possibly intake - not sure exactly what they did sure someone else will be along who does... even better if it is a genuine / original conversation - you have a little gem there

Original John Cooper conversions are highly prized. Your certificate is for the original version, not the new one from MiniSport. Although there were and still other ways to achieve the same power, the historic association with Cooper makes it particularly interesting. The main component is the gas flowed cylinder head developed with Janspeed. The kit cost £763.75 in 1992. It is worth checking it still has all the bits shown in the brochure. It is unlikely that the exhaust system will have survived intact all this time.

None of the records have survived and there is no register for Si conversions other than the more general one kept by John Parnell, Rover Cooper Registrar for the Mini Cooper Register. The FaceBook group for the John Cooper Garages Club often has discussions about S conversion.

My 1990 Mini Cooper has the earlier carburettor Cooper S conversion.

Incidentally, as this is the technical section information has to be accurate. It has been confirmed in Mini World, Mini Magazine and CooperWorld that the new versions are not rebranded MiniSport heads but are true to the original Cooper design. Unless anyone can prove otherwise.

Brilliant

BUT not all good news in as much as we bought it as a failed HIF44 conversion albeit we still have the SPi set up with it.
With exception of the head I suspect the other engine bits aren't present but will get some photos tonight.

Actually the head and the Janspeed exhaust back box were the main parts of the 'Si' kit raising power to 74 BHP.

The other parts were:

oil cooler kit

new ratio fan pulley and fan belt

gaskets

MG metro rocker cover, which is quite easy to obtain

Cooper key fob

floor plate and certificate

decals

There are always people interested in having the back boxes remade by Janspeed. The minimum order is 10. The RSP Cooper Register had 10 made in stainless steel but these have all been taken.

The signature on the original certificate was printed.

Many kits were fitted by dealers. If you do not have original John Cooper receipts but can find extra unofficial initials on the VIN plate then that would indicate it was converted at John Cooper Garages in Ferring. The initials are of the person who did the conversion.

Does the certificate say John N or John M Cooper, it might help age the conversion. A photo of the rear wing sticker and bonnet badge would help. My JC conversion did not have the extra letters engraved on the vin, mine was a 96 Si, No 76

Certificate says J N Cooper.

Rear wing decals have been all but polished out by the owner, and the cylinder head is a 12G940 with no additional markings that I can see that makes it stand out from the crowd.

I am not getting particularly excited about this, as I don't think I have anything to prove it's got anything left of the conversion apart from a floor plate on the carpet, and a certificate!

thanks to everyone for all the interesting and constructive replies; much appreciated.

Mike

... and my mate has taken the car to get it started on the carb, so I can't check the extra letters on the VIN plate until he gets home tonight.
