One of which is an MG 1100 with a 295 Cooper head.
The other is an A+ 998 again with a 295 Cooper head.
What decision should I be making?

Not after massive amounts of Pub talk power either!

You will need to run a final drive ratio to suit the cam and that should give good acceleration combine with fair cruise speed at around 3500 rpm.
It will help you to understand how to do the cam selection, work out the compression ratio and measure up prior to machining.

Thanks for the information.
This nowbrings me to my next question, how easy it to put the 1098 block on a A+/Rod change gearbox?

The MG1100 unit will be about 50 years old. If you're lucky it might be in good condition but chances are it will need a rebuild. The A+ 998 may be only be 30 years old, and in my experience the 998's don't seem to wear out and go smoky as quickly as the 1098.
If it's for a quick fun road car the 998 can stand high revs and quite a bit of tuning. But will drive very differently to the 1098. And if you do go for the 1098 make sure it has a crank damper fitted.
Either block should fit onto an A+ or rod change gearbox.

1098`s are lovely motors with loads of lazy torque compared to a 998. If you get a good one a look after it with regular oil changes it will go on and on forever but as mentioned it will probably need a rebuild due to its age and unknown origin. That said a 998 with a 295 head would not have had an easy life so its best to regard both units as needing a rebuild.
If that were the case i would personally go for the 1098 as you don`t need to rev the motor hard and it will hold the gears for longer on the hills and the cabin noise is lower.
But if you want a car to take out and ring its neck like a motor cycle engine the 998 is for you. 998`s are great little screamers that can be ragged hard.
Decisions decisions, i`m glad I have one of each ;)

FYI, the MG1100 Engine would have been factory fitted with the 12G295.

Hi I too have a 1098 from an 1100 special and an 998, I was interested to read an article from Keith Calver about the 1100 engine and wondered is it worth the effort and money or do I get a 1275 and and spend the money on getting that sorted, or put the 12G295 head on the 998, questions, questions. The 998 has much better history, the 1100, I have no idea about, got off ebay

Thinks how manual posts have appeared on here where engines have been fitted without prior stripping and rebuild ingredients as necessarily only to have had told be removes almost immediately.
