Inertia Starter Bendix Gear 9 Or 10 Teeth

Best Answer ACDodd , 19 June 2016 - 08:30 AM

The battery cable runs are much shorter and the higher gear ratio makes the engine crank faster. 9 or 10 tooth mesh with the ring gear. Inertia starters are really on there limits with modern compression ratios. The later pre engaged type is much better able to cope with compression ratios over 9.25:1.

Just taken my starter motor off and found the Bendix gear had 10 teeth. The one I'm replacing it with has 9 teeth!
Will they both fit the same flywheel starter ring ?

Found this topic:-

Which implies I perhaps have  a Metro engine? Still need to know if the 9 tooth will fit if the engine is from a metro or should I replace like for like and get a 10 tooth?

Thanks, I will, but can you tell me why the 10 tooth bendix was used on the early Metro. I'm assuming it was with the same flywheel ring gear!

Thanks for the info I'll put the 9 in as you suggest. Raised questions in my mind when I saw the difference; a search of the web didn't throw up an answer.
