So Paddy is in for his MoT tomorrow, I had a couple of things to do, replace one of his broken wing mirrors and just check lights, battery  and stupid stuff. So new wing mirror sorted, all bulbs working, feeling pleased with myself so decided to replace his fuel sender unit which was knackered even though it wouldn't affect his MoT.

Started badly with a mouthful of petrol draining the tank, should have spotted the omens and stopped there. Old sender unit out, no problem, tried to manipulate the new one into place but it wasn't having it, tried all sorts of different angles but no. Then disaster, the float detaches itself from the arm and is now at the bottom of the tank.

So, battery out, tank out, petrol everywhere, retrieved float with a set of BBQ tongs, and started again. Lot easier to fit with the tank out and my hand can just squeeze through the top of the tank to help guide it into position. Unfortunately the top of the tank has a razor edge and I slice the top of my wrist open. Blood and petrol everywhere now.

So finally get the sender fitted, refitted the tank (against its will) and everything's nearly back to order. Battery back in, go to tighten up the positive and accidentally bridge the terminals with my spanner. Sparks everywhere, jump back, crack head on garage door. Fortunately I'd cleared up the blood and petrol otherwise I'd be a BBQ steak by now.

So 2 hours longer than planned, several cuts and bruises later, he is ready for his MoT tomorrow, better bloody pass

Thanks, probably the only thing I got right was making sure everything was cleaned through and aired before reconnecting the battery

I managed to bridge the terminals on my dads tractor battery (very big and very heavy). Now that sparked! And managed to melt a portion out of his best 1/2" snap on ring spanner... He wasn't best pleased

It's amazing how quickly the spanner can find the terminals

would never happen if you wanted it to

It does!

Best of luck to the OP for the MOT!

I usually ask my tester (who is a good friend of the family) to do a mock test a month before the expiry date, this way it will pass and I am not stuck without a car(mini is in daily use until the winter!)

There are many reasons why you shouldn't touch mechanical stuff and this is just one of them!!!
