Hi

am trying to find out some details on a ex works cooper engine.

know there are fakes out there but have no reason to doubt the previous owner as he was an ex Leyland engineer.

originally it started out a 998 by the looks of the heater tap on the head.

Hand stamped on corner of the head is

Cooper unleaded

28 02 1990

25.500.

and what looks like .1001. need to have a magnifying glass to confirm this set of numbers

was told it is a 1380 stage 2 coupled with a close ratio gearbox.

external viewing shows

rockers have been lightened and polished

ports polished and larger than normal.

set of twin carbs

does cooper works still exist

any info most gratefully recieved

pictures paint a thousand words

any casting numbers on the head, any engine numbers?

I would guess the head stampings indicate its a cooper head, date stamp and possibly 25.5cc combustion chambers

I cant imagine a 998 head being used on 1380 to great affect

I don't think you can tell what box it is without looking inside

cooper garages are no longer around. Mike Cooper, John's son, has started selling Cooper branded stuff again, including rebranded Minisport tuning kits. Highly unlikely they will be able to help you with this though

The markings do indicate a Cooper kit. In early 1990 the only available kit was the 1000cc kit. Rover did not re-introduce a 1275cc Mini until July 1990 and the 1275 Cooper 'S' Pack followed soon after. The 1000cc kit consisted of a large valve polished and ported head, twin HS2 carbs, K&N pancake filters, performance lcb and exhaust system and an MG Metro type rocker cover. These kits were developed with Janspeed.

A 1380 version was introduced in 1995 in both carb and injection versions. This involved an engine block exchange and was very rare - just a handful. I doubt if any exist that are not known about. It would also have had a new head. John Cooper Garages closed ten years ago.

Development with Janspeed of 1275cc versions was continued through SPi and MPi models, in the late 1990s MiniSport took over production as Janspeed could not keep up with demand. It is these Cooper developed heads that have been reintroduced and sold by MiniSport and are distinct from MiniSport's own heads.

Thanks guys,

going with everything said so far. It has been ported and polished, twin carbed with pancakes

looks like rockers have been altered/lightened polished or changed. and a chunky exhaust system.

.

Alice will be happy to know her heart has been verified.
