Hi,

Can you fit an immobiliser to a Mk1 Mini? If you can where can I find one to fit and if you can't what else can you do to protect it from burglary?

Ebay is full of cheap universal immobilisers that cut the power to coil and electric pump with the flick of a switch. Personally, I always think a quick release on the steering wheel is the the best answer if your at home, (not much fun carrying a mini steering wheel around a restaurant).

Simple hidden switch fitted between coil wire or fuel pump, could have a fuel pump cut off switch inside the boot.

Big angry dobermanns do the trick too. And I'm not joking. If you own a valuable classic car, consider getting a dog.

If you are running positive earth it does seem to cut down your options on modern electronic devices.

However, a hidden switch for the fuel pump for example will help deter and is very easy to do.

Battery kill switch in the boot is pretty easy to do too.

I'm sure there'll be a topic, or web content elsewhere, that explains how to add a switch to earth in parallel with the dizzy - good as everything behaves normally apart from the plugs not sparking.

Alternatives are to take the rotor arm or at least one HT lead with you; fit a tap to the fuel line or float vent (easier if you have a vent pipe).

A visible mechanical deterrent could be better at discouraging the scumbags from even trying. Likewise, trying not to have a predictable routine is important to avoid being targeted.

To activate / deactivate a relay in the ignition circuit and also a little flashing led or something

Put a wire on the distributor side of the coil, to an on/off switch, then to earth. Nothing will convince it to start. Hide the switch and you have a cheap immobiliser.

Or wire the dizzy to the horn over a switch, super effective :P

Agree with a switch for coil to earth, have done that many times. Back it up with a switch for fuel pump, then it will run out down the road.

Also consider a battery kill switch that you can take with you.

Also consider a battery kill switch that you can take with you.

Be aware that there are two types of kill switches. one is just a switch and easy to override to get the car started. the other actually turns off the engine as well as being a switch in the battery cable.
