Anyone that has seen my posts lately will see that I have just fitted a new engine, and I was having problems getting oil pressure and a spark at the plugs. I now seem to have solved those problems, but I still can't get the thing to start.

There is petrol coming through as the plugs are wet, and I think I set the timing right (initially about 8 degrees advance, but as it was starting I added a bit more advance to it).

What else could it be? The petrol in there is pretty old (about 9 months), but I did put some fuel preserver in the tank so shouldn't it be ok?

so what was the timing? and what is it now?

you say about and you say some more......

so I am guessing you are talking static timing?

10 static sounds a lot. 5-6 is a good starting point.

standard engine?

petrol will be ok.

It was 8 degrees initially, an it wasn't starting, I then nudged the dizzy clockwise slightly.

I've reset the static timing to 5 degrees, and I tried starting it. I could hear that it was almost trying to fire but wouldn't. The battery then went flat so I have had to put that on charge for now.

ok while you are waiting for the battery to charge. pull the plugs and clean them and dry them out.

and oven is good.

may be leave the oven till the battery is charged and fitted so you can fit warm plugs to aid starting. when started set your dynamic timing.

Hotter spark plugs presumably make it easier to start then?

one, you dry them out

two, it helps get the gasses burning.

is a good last resort to on a very cold morning. and put some sausages in at the same time for a breakfast.

Well the oven trick helped slightly. When I tried again, the car would start for a second, and then die as soon as I let go of the key. I'm thinking my timing must still be out if it's doing that?

Unfortunately my battery went flat again so I didn't have a real chance to investigate it. I might let it charge up all night and try again in the morning.

Haynes is useless at explaining how to set up the timing on an electronic dizzy. It only really explains how to do it on a car with points.

It is exactly the same really. It just comes down to working out how your set up triggers the coil.

The main thing is get the battery well charged.

Yeah I'm starting to think now the battery is the main problem. It seems to completely drain after a few attempts to start.

This is driving me mad now!

I have the timing set at 5 degrees, I have fuel and I have spark. So why won't it fire!?

I don't know what else I can do.

Anyone have any suggestions?
