I'm looking for a connector to connect 5/16th (8mm) metal fuel pipe to 5/16th flexible fuel pipe. I don't want to go down the JIC route if there's a lower cost alternative.

Rubber flexible, the problem is, there is no swage on the end of the metal pipe and it's running at 3.5 bar therefore I'm reasonably certain a hose clip would let the pipe blow off.

A compression fitting should hold that pressure, you can get a hose tail to screw on then.

What I did was to cut a thread on the pipe end and tap a barbed hose connector, drill out the connector so it sleeves plenty of unthreaded pipe too & use thread lock

I understand what you're saying, the problem is, the pipe is close to the bulkhead and I wouldn't be able to get a die on it.

Sounds good, do you know where I could get one from with a 5/16th barb on the end?

8mm will do the job and be easier to find.
See what 5/16, 8mm or G1/4 finds you in Google with compression.
