Hi everyone!

I recently acquired a 1986 MK V Saloon with a Rod Change Linkage in great condition, but the shifter slop makes it very difficult to find 1st gear. Once you do find it, the transmission happily moves through the rest of the gears. Does anyone have a guide on fixing the issue? Thanks!

New roll pins may help. Get underneath the car and jiggle the linkage. If you can feel play then you may have found the problem.

Thanks guys! I'll get under the car after work tomorrow. Do you think the problem will more likely be the coupler or the roll pins?

Quick update: It looks like the person who owned the car before me used a cotter pin to hold the rod change axle to the coupler. I just cut the cotter pin off and knocked a roll pin into the coupler. The change is like night and day; it shifts at least a million times better!

Cheers!
