Hi, I have an issue with my 72 mini 1000. I just replaced all my brakes so drums, shoes, springs and cylinders everywhere.

I adjusted them and the front is good but at the rear they lock up under normal braking (not heavy) so this causes me to spin a bit and looks dangerous.

Any ideas what the problem could be? I read somewhere on the forums that it could be a different wheel cylinder but I'm positive the new ones are the same size as the old ones.

You probably need to replace the pressure limiter valve.

Other checks to make are to see if the rear brakes locking up has anything to do with other new components fitted such as brake shoes or drums.

- new drums may be slightly rough on inside until used for a while

- new rear brake shoes may snatch, worth chamfering off the leading edge

- check new rear drums for any ovality (unlikely) or running off-centre (possible)

Try driving along on quiet straight road (at no more than 30mph) and very carefully pull gently on just the handbrake. If the car slows steadily then brake drums are probably centred OK, if there is a 'shuddery' feel to the braking then try putting the old drums back on and see if this helps.

(carbon, consider your post ^ liked - I've run out for the day)

One other thing to check is that the rear shoes are in the right way around. Each rear wheel should have a leading and trailing shoe, if one is fitted the wrong way around, they'll both be leading and will grab.

I'd put up a picture, only my stupid photo hoster won't play the game.

<EDIT - Amazing what the threat of a hammer will do,,,,,
