After Rebuild, Starts, Won't Run - Some Help Please

Best Answer ryomini , 25 July 2016 - 09:40 AM

Yay

PROBLEM SOLVED

thanks for all your good suggestions

yes it was obvious that the prob was the injector not firing so the CPS was the next logical step after checking pressure and pressured fuel

crazy as it sounds the 'o' ring in the injector head section was worn and loose fitting - I put in a new tight 'o' ring bolted all back up smoothly and it started first time on the nose and gave some - it certainly likes to rev

anyhoo problem sorted and it starts and idles normally for now

(the new problem is the rad leaks under building pressure - can't tell you how many times I have had the rad on and off now!)

Hello all and

again a VERY BIG THANKS to all of you who have helped and encouraged me along the way

saving this lovely old '93 SPI from certain scrap heap doom

well I finally got oil in the motor, water in the radiator (still a small leak somewhere that needs to be sorted), and fresh high octane gasoline in the petrol tank

and lo and behold it STARTS

and if I pour about 1-2cc of petrol in the throttle body it will run a few seconds

I have pulled the hoses orange and green and they are full of petrol

I have unbolted the tubes army green steel pipes from the throttle body - they are also full of petrol

I have dismantled the top of the injector - the star screws and it is full of petrol

but as it seems to my little brain there is not a regular supply of petrol

as whenever I pour some into the throttle body it starts again and will run just 3-4 seconds if that

I have started it about 10 - 15 times always with the same results

(unfortunately this is not good for breaking in the new camshaft which needs a decent amount of oil pressure - ie 30 minutes at 2-2500 rpm)

and the old battery goes flat pretty quickly

hard work but I feel that I am close.  I still have a teeny weeny bit of energy left

I should know what to look at next but I am just not sure what to check

like I say it starts and the amazing thing everything appears to work fairly well

not bad for a 250 quid non runner when I bought it

so if you can give me some big pointers I am all ears as to what to do next

many thanks again

When you turn the ignition on can you hear the pump build pressure?

Yours is an SPi ain't it?

Does it have an immobiliser ? I've got a similar problem with a friends car but when I swapped to a non-coded ecu it started ok and ran suggesting a problem with the 5AS system

Thanks for some suggestions

- yes the pump is whining at ignition and when I pull the orange and green hoses they appear to have some kind of pressure in the tubes (ie a bit of petrol spurts out when you pull the tube)

- what do the immobilisers look like, I don't think that mine has one, just the funny thing that hangs off the relay pod near the brake lever that has a rubber cover over it - maybe I should plug and unplug it and see if it has a good connection

I will try the ignition accelerator cable set with the stepper motor

and I will double check resetting the fuel cut off with the rubber top

should be able to have another go soon

will update cheers

No immobiliser on JDM cars :D
Check crank sensor it's the most likely culprit.

FS what does the crank sensor look like and where is it ?

Do you mean the timing sensor under the starter motor ?

the stepper motor sensor works as you can see it move when you turn the ignition ?

Ok yep the crank sensor is the one that watches the 2 big gaps in the flywheel as it spins round

what is the test procedure for this one ?

However if it wasn't functioning would the car start ?  There isn't much to fiddle with on it or clean either for that matter ?

If the crank senser is faulty or has damaged wiring the ecu will not open the injector to start the engine as it dosent know that the engine is turning over.

For the rad issue have try pouring a bottle of Kseal into it...

Hello

how much is a  bottle of k seal ?

how reliable is it ?

do you have any experience with it

a new ally rad is 60 quid or so plus 15 quid for the screw in type temp switch

I generally like economical solutions but a rad has a lot of hot fluid under pressure

can't see some epoxy or whatever really holding on for the next 10 years or so
