My car was originally a 1990 Studio 2. I need to identify a wire in the engine compartment preferably by the fuse box that goes live when the ignition is turned on but is suppressed when the starter is engaged. It doesn't have to be a large amperage, all I need it for is to take a feed from it to switch a relay. What colour should I be looking for?

terminal 4 on fuse box These systems operate
independently of the ignition switch

Does this switch off when you turn off the ignition; because that's what I need. If it does, mines had the fuse box replaced, do you know what colour it is?

You seem to want something that is live only when the ignition is on, but not during engine start. That functionality is not available within the normal Mini wiring. You would need a special ignition switch or a relay to implement it.

If using a relay, get a changeover relay. The coil is fed from the feed to the starter relay, so it is live only when the key is turned. The other end of the coil is earthed. The common contact goes to a fused feed from the white circuit, and the normally closed contact to your load.

You're correct in understanding what I want, I didn't realise it wasn't available on the Mini. I'll try your solution. Thanks.

White wires are unfused ignition fed, fused are green*. I can't think of any that switch as you describe, You could add a relay, solenoids for ballasted ignition have a spade terminal that's only live when the starter engages.

*be wary of overloading.

....As Tiger said as crossover or normally closed relay will do the job.

What about using the feed to the starter solenoid from the ignition switch to activate a cross-over relay which cuts the feed to whatever you the OP is trying to do ? I can visualise it in my head, but need to scribble a rough wiring diagram ..

That sounds like a cleaner solution, I know what you're trying to explain, a sketch would help. Thanks

5-pin-12V-automotive-relay.jpg

5 pin relay should do it

White or green feed into pin 30 depending if you want it fused.

87a to whatever your powering with ignition on (Non starter)

87 left blank

85 and 86 ground and feed to starter solenoid energiser wire.

87a will be live until your spin the starter then the relay will click over and 87 will be live but nothing connected

On my car I have a light green/white wire running from the ignition switch which feeds fuse 3 which is only live in positions 2 and 3 of the ignition. I.e. not live when the ignition is off or on starting.

The only thing I would add is that my car had a heavily modified loom so might not be standard, but worth a try.

Before I buy a relay I'll have a look and see if I've got the same wire. Thanks.
