Can I get these out by stripping hub down and pulling through subframe or is the only way to lift engine out so they fall free of gearbox? Car on drive and stuck in gear, need to move it!

I'm assuming its a pot joint drive shaft. Usually removing just the top ball joint will give you enough room to release the inner end from the engine. Although, they just don't fall out, or shouldn't do. Sometimes levering them against a bolt head, (not the casing) will pop them out, sometimes it takes a bit more effort. There is a service tool if they are tight.

You can't totally remove the shaft as the inner pot joint is too large for the hole in the subframe, without removing the suspension strut.

How will you move it without the shafts? Are you going to split the cv joint and put back on? The cv needs to be in the hub so the drive flange can go back on.

Tried trolley jack but thanks to my drive having a kerb the jack grounded! Sorted now, I took one driveshaft out of gearbox but left other end in the hub. Wheels turn freely once one is out. The drive shaft split (in that the pot stayed in the gearbox but not too bothered as I'm taking engine out to replace it and will be treating myself to new shafts anyway.
Thought I was being really clever taking gear linkage apart to clean up!!

Forget the new driveshafts....HOW MUCH! Hope I can re-assemble/overhaul the existing ones. Ball bearing ps everywhere where I tried to pull out the pot!

There is a Rover tool which I think is shown in the Haynes manual which pulls the shaft out of the pot joint. Then the shaft comes out of the car easily.

Unfortunately none of the spares suppliers has seen fit to replicate the tool, which would be immensely useful.
