Hi everyone,

As part of possible head gasket failure, I'm off to remove the cylinder head shortly. I'm quite comfortable doing this, but obviously once it's all done, I want to ensure that I'm checking correctly.
Obviously I'll check the head gasket, and it will be replaced...however, whilst I'm in there...what else should I be doing/checking for?

Thnx.

Use a decent straight edge to check the head face is true. Something like a steel rule.

While the head is off it may pay you to decoke the head so whip the valves out. Give it all a good clean up and then relap the valves. Do check the valve seats though for any damage.

If all good then fit new valve stem seals.

If it's a 1275 head with the brass plugs, check that none of these are sitting low (not flush). In particular the plug between cylinders 2 and 3.

Check block area around head studs, may be worth removing studs and give stud holes slight countersink to make sure head sits right down on block.
