Hi All,

So after many years I finally pulled the 1275 MG Metro engine out the car for my project Equinox. Can anyone tell me what changes/parts I will need to convert it over and fit it to the Mini?

Thanks

Peter

One thing easily overlooked is the speedo drive gears. Use Guessworks' site to work out what you need to change to.

Clutch release mechanism( hydraulic on Minis, cable on metros)

Thermostat housing

Need a cooling fan fitted to water pump pulley

Timing chain cover may well need to be a Mini type with the flattened breather thingy or the fan will hit it

Need a suitable exhaust system, whole range of choices there.

Engine mounts are different

The Metro  breather canister above the clutch is different to the Mini one and fouls the brake servo.

There's a start ! I'm sure there's other stuff, others will doubtless advise

Are you keeping the SPI on the Equinox ? If so the MG cam will play havoc with it. Swap it to either a standard cam, SW5 or Kent 274

Great, that's a start!

No I'm ditching the SPI. The car was in a fire and destroyed all that!

Make sure you keep the documentation for the engine, v5 of donor car is best... this way, when it comes to the MOT and emissions, it'll be tested on the age of the engine and not the age of the car it's in...

There might be a water cooled Oil cooler head on the oil filter. Get rid.

Also the timing chain backing plate will probably have a rear extension for the Metro rear engine mounting. If it's in the way then chop it off.

The oil to water heat exchanger on the MG Metro unit is one of its best features. Helps to warm up the oil a bit quicker, and then keep it at a sensible temperature.

Much better than a oil to air cooler for use throughout the year on a road car. But is a close fit with mini front subframe.
