Hi Angus, have a good look at the bore while the heads off. Whatever caused the damage will be quite hard and must have gone somewhere. Hopefully out the exhaust but just in case ........

I have checked it for damage but it seems to be fine! got my dad to check too because he used to repair tractor engines but he says its all good too no signs of damage, i think i have been very lucky and it has escaped out the exhaust as you said!
