Hi guys another question about starting my new engine. So everything is plumbed in and plugged in all the right places but I'm still struggling to get it started. So far I've had to change the starter motor as the one from 85 couldn't deal with the extra compression. I also know that my ignition timing is bang on at about 8 degrees BTDC, I'm pretty sure it's got fuel as it does attempt to start but won't keep going without throttle I know it's got spark and it's defiantly got compression. Where should I start looking first.
My only two guesses so far are fuel issue as I've never rebuilt a carb before
And the other guess is that cam timing might be slightly off.

Any help would be great fully appreciated as need to get the car running in the next week. It has a show it needs to be at.

Does it run with the throttle slightly open and the choke on?

If it does, then the mixture needs setting and it may be running too weak.

If it won't run at all it may be timed 180 degrees out.

It will run even if the cam timing is quite a long way out so long as the mixture is within certain limits and the spark is at the right time with sufficient fuel supply.

If it will only run with a lot of choke and throttle and the needle is set to a fairly rich setting, it is possible there is an air leak in the induction system.

you need to prime oil pump berfore you try and start engine.....1st remove plugs then remove large banjo bolt top of block under no4 cyl then pour some 20/50 oil down spin engine over then repeat till good oil pressure is obtained replace bnjo then plugs and give it a go.....good luck

Yes you most definitely need to prime the oil pump

full oil filter, oil full and as the previous poster says through the filter to block orifice for final priming

if you put a little gas in the inlet and it starts then you have a fuel issue

try starting with and without the air filter, sometimes helps

and like cooperman says with and without choke

a well charged decent battery and new plugs helps too

retard the timing to 5 B TDC static then any engine should start.

and as above check the timing again. and that the rotor is pointing to the correct terminal that is connected to the correct plug.

if the dizzy drive has not been fitted correctly then it is easy to get things wrong.

I've had a look at the cam timing and I'm at 103 ATDC when I need to be at 106, which way do I need to turn the cam to get it right

The offset woodruff key must turn the sprocket anti-clockwise as you look at the front of the engine. The front is the end with the timing gears on.

At 103 degrees ATDC the engine will run ok if everything else is set correctly. I have seen them run with more error than that.
