Valve Lifter Won't Reseat. What Is This?

Best Answer BobonGuernsey , 13 August 2016 - 08:43 AM

Agree with David 128. As the rod is sitting very high you may be lucky with a quality magnet probe of the car aerial type as Andrew says. Just a case of giving it a go and see if you can get the magnet into the follower bucket. For others that may not know, if you have to split a head at any time always give some rapid sideways wiggles to the rods whilst maintaining a light lift to break the oil 'lock' to avoid this. If using existing cam and followers the rods should be kept matched their original followers as well so they don't have to bed in again with different followers. Bit of cardboard numbered 1-8 with the rods pushed through is all it is.
So, try magnet, hopefully side plates as plan B or its bad news unfortunately. Best of luck mate. Go to the full post

I got my gasket kit in today after giving the top of the engine a good clean I went to put the lifters back in and number 4 won't drop in. I took some pictures of what I can see. I can't figure out what this socket looking thing is in there but I can move it around side to side and it block one lifter or the other. any ideas what it could be and how to get rid of it without taking the bottom end apart?

Its an '89 998cc mayfair.

looks like cam follower lifted out when push rod pulled out. If you have removable plates at rear of engine just remove and refit, otherwise engine out or lots of messing with magnet.

As David has siad, it'll be a follower, but your engine being a 998 has side plates so easy to get at.

The follower lifting out can't happen in a non-S 1275 engine.

Just looking at your pic again, a thin piece of welding wire with a little hook on should get the follower in position over the hole and either drop in or put it in a position to use the push rod with a blob of thick grease to line it up. Looks hopeful to me.

Thanks guys! that little window on the back is a real life saver and I would have never known about it otherwise. My haynes book is in the mail but I think I will finally get to drive this guy today! so exciting

I got it all put back together and fired it up but it won't start till 12 degrees BTDC. that sounds really odd to me from everything I have read on here. any little tap of the gas and it dies instantly. vacuum leak?

Sounds like an air leak possibly around inlet manifold. When you have it running try spraying wd40 around inlet manifold if you get an increase in rpm it would indicate an air leak.

A bit late now but whenever I take pushrods (lifters) out I give them a wiggle before lifting or rotate them to unstick them.

I found some cracks on the hose that goes from the carb to the vacuum can on back of the motor. I blew into it and could hear air coming out into the rocker area but not really sure how it got in there since I can't see another opening on the can aside from the one to the carb. taped it up nice and tight and it idled a lot smoother. Ill try the WD idea too before I send minispares the other part of my paycheck. Might just buy all new vacuum lines can and dizzy advance.
