Hi all,

I've removed my heater unit on my 1988 Mini Mayfair as I had trouble getting to the clutch comfortably with my clown feet.

I've removed the heater pipes that go through the bulkhead into the cabin and have connected the hoses in the engine bay together and have left the heater valve in place in the closed position.

Is it best to leave it as it is currently set up with the valve closed. Or should I be running it with the heater valve open to allow the coolant to flow.

The way I see it is that at the moment there's no difference than running with the heater in place and the valve closed anyway but I just want to check.

If that is the case then I can use a blanking connector between the two hoses - I want to leave the hoses in place in case I ever want to put the heater back on.

Thanks,

Paul

I forgot to mention that it's had an engine swap to an earlier A series 998 (not sure if that matters).

It does not really matter.

I have mine "open" to allow better flow from that end of the head.

On a 998 standard don't worry. Other than the "tap" is something that could fail.

Unless its a racer, you'll really start to miss that heater in a couple of months. "Clown feet" are a bit of a problem with a mini, I kept kicking the water pipes, (that come through the pedal box), every time I went for the clutch. I got an MPI heater that has the pipes coming through the left hand bulkhead and entering the heater from the left. Also has the advantage of an internal heater valve and two speed fan.

Mine had the water pipes to the left of the heater but the heater unit itself was in my way.

Hopefully heat shouldn't be a problem. I just came from a landy I ran for 5 years with a heater that was less than useless! We'll see though.

If you look at the kit car parts suppliers you will find that some of them supply small but very efficient heaters. Perhaps one of these would solve your problem?
