My Mini has been sat around for years but i treated it to new oil, leads plugs, rotor arm and a distibutor cap and a decently charged battery.

The engine runs fine. There is oil in the HIF44 dash pot too. The points look fine and have been lightly emery papered to clean the contacts.

The engine will idle and rev right up the range to a good few thousand rpm.

All the wheel bearings are fine, the drums and discs turn freely and the tyre pressures are good.

I went for a little drive around the car park. It just would not accelerate to more than about 20 mph.  If i opened the throttle more it just started to die on me.

The only i can see wrong is an exhaust leak, where the LCB meets the exhaust system.

Could this be the cause of all the trouble?

yes, and a solid state pump.

could the clutch drive straps have anything to do with it?

i thought it might be consuming it's own exhaust gases and that was killing it?

sounds like a sticking carb piston.

top off and give the insides a clean.

Age of the car?

Manual or auto?

The car is a manual, the engine is about 18 years old.

The piston in the dash pot moves freely.  Is normal 20W50 engine oil ok for the dash pot?

I've had something similar happen in a 1275 A series Allegro and what fixed it was replacing the sparkplugs. I had cleaned them so didn't think they would be the issue but decided to just in case and it sorted it right out. I'd give that a go if you haven't already.

Good luck!
