Hi I have a 98 Japanese mini
The 2nd gear grinds when trying to go in at speed higher than 20km

Once in, it drives normal and stays in gear.

What could be wrong ??
Thanks

As above, most likely the Baulk Ring is worn out. It's also likely the Synchro Hub Detent Springs have lost their 'zing' and also need replacing.

Sometimes the Syncho Cone on the gear itself can be worn or de-laminated as well. They are getting hard to come by for these gearboxes.

Something else to consider. Mine does that with Valvoline Racing oil 20w-50 when cold. After a few minutes running and reaching operating temperature, it goes away completely. The cooler the ambient temperature the longer it takes. This is a Guess-works remanufactured gearbox. The old one behaved the same way until it broke the differential. So oil and temperature could be a factor and this is in Florida where "cold" is relative.

My experience of a later Mini MPi sounds similar but I had terrible grinding changing down from 3rd to 2nd. Sometimes 2nd would pop out. I managed it with careful gear changes but hardly spirited driving in a Mini.

I contacted John at Guessworks and he confirmed it was the weak baulk rings fitted to later Minis. Had the gearbox refurbished by him and now perfect. Top guy and first place to go regarding any gearbox work.

Do not fit original Rover baulk rings. Get better ones from John and any other parts

I found this very useful in explaining the issue

Bulker ring. Exactly the same issue. Can you go 3rd to 2nd hard?

Just double clutch or blip the throttle when going to second. I do this now out of habit even though second on the gearbox in this mini is fine.
