By Mk4 do you mean a Mini from the mid 1970's to 80's?

I ask because they never had "park lights" connected to the ignition.

may have been an after market thing - wonder if NZ had running lights ?

but I think he means side lights

I would check the headlight switch first , they are known for melting / doing wierd things

if it has a dimdip relay that is also a possible problem area (may be too old) (pink relay slightly larger than usual relay)

it's possible someone has bridged a live somewhere giving a permanent feed to the side lights

indicators not flashing - do you mean on constant - if so you may need a new flasher can / unit - give the indicator unit a tap - it may blink again

this is all assuming it's a classic & not a BMW BINI

pull the plug so all wire are disconnected- if that fixes then that is the fault.

But see above.

The ignition switch has no involvement in the lighting circuits so they can remain on with the ignition off.

As above, suspect a short between the brown (permanently live) and red (side/tail/dash lights) at the light switch or anywhere else that the wires meet. It is usually the switch but it is just possible to have a short somewhere else, maybe in the instrument cluster, or in the wiring loom if it has been crushed or overheated.

Try to fix the sidelight problem before moving on to the indicators, which may be slightly more complex, and most likely involving the indicator flasher unit and the hazard switch.

But also check that no-one has scrambled the wires at the bunch of bullet connectors behind the slam panel, or in the boot, and that the front and rear earths are intact.
