depends if you know a nice tig welder he might be able to do for u in the car but you will need to get it oil free, otherwise engine out and replace

MIG will also do, and may sometimes cause less distortion. I don't know what the damage is like but would suggest having the transmission upside down, bolted to a block and transfer case, to try to avoid causing distortion. Lay down a small amount of metal at a time and allow to cool. If it fails you have only wasted some time, pure argon and ali MIG wire, which should not break the bank. If it works you have saved the cost of a new transmission case.
As above, needs to be oil free around the weld area, and don't have a situation where hot ali globules drop onto rusted steel...
For a really small repair, Lumiweld, which is half way between soldering and welding, may be a better choice, but maybe not in a stressed area.

Can you clean it up as best you can and post a photo for us?

I had a gearbox casing repaired which had not a crack but a hole about 3/8" across.
I found a guy who was a CAA Approved welder and he did it without my having to remove the gears from the box. I just took the engine out of the car and took the engine off of the gearbox. It cost me a decent bottle of Scotch!

Cooperman, did it fly properly after the attention of the CAA approved welder?

It absolutely 'rockets' on special stages .
