Hi all,

The previous owner of my mini has attempted to modify it and I believe he may have tried to fit a stage one kit. The car drives (barely) and unless you have the choke pulled OUT then it really struggles to move along comfortably. I guess this stems down mainly to the carb and what I believe to have the wrong needle in? It's a 998cc mini city I've attached a picture of it on the car.

My question is: is this the correct carb? If so should I buy the correct needle (which I think is ADE) and replace the one inside or should I just buy a new carb?

David

Best thing to do it get it rolling roaded with the set up you have as they will make a needle just for your car and set up and the best set up for your car.

what needle was ever fitted when it was standard / new will not work if the exhaust , carb ect has been changed, buying a new carb will not solve it.

then leave it alone as if you ever change anything you will need a new needle.

p.s. what mini and what mods engine ect???????????????????????????????????????

If it has had the exhaust and inlet manifold changed, it should have something like an AAU needle. Fitting a standard needle won't help.

So it's a 998cc 1991

Mods wise..I believe all that's been changing is the exhaust, and the carb has been played with. The manifold I believe to be standard, but I can't be sure and don't know enough about mini to check. It has no mot so getting it rolling roaded might be difficult?

Thanks for the replies!

David,

It's a HS4 carb, they were fitted to the 998 minis.

Before changing the carb neede would suggest checking what needle you already have fitted. Take the needle out and look for the needle code, and at same time check it for any signs of wear where it rubs against the jet (small lip about 3 - 5 mm from the piston face).

If the needle is worn it can give the symptoms you describe after the idle mixture has been adjusted.

I would try fitting new needle AAU as I had on my "stage 1" and it will work good but as they all said changing needle is not as only changing it and let it go. You may have to take it to a roller and make the real work!

Rolling Road it.

Todays crap fuel is impossible. When there was lead in petrol, at least you could gauge it better with needles.
