Given it appears you are after some performance, I'd suggest kicking off with a 1275 engine and go from there.
As far as being 'robust' goes, A and A+ are much for muchness, but IMO the late A were the pick, just before they went to A+.
Given it'll be a daily driver, I'd suggest not going overboard in souping it up, the novelty of it will wear off before long and it's life will be shorter. I'd suggest aiming for around the 80 HP mark for a sensible all rounder, with Helical Cut Gears, it'll be easy enough to drive while still being loads of fun.
Let me see if I understand what you're saying. Instead of buying a 1293cc or a 1380cc engine (for example), I should get a 1275cc (used maybe?), add the head, and change the cam, crank, pistons, etc has I go down the road?
Also, how can I know if I'm getting a late A series or a earlier A series? By the year of it? The engine nº can give me that info right?
I will do that!
The late 1275 Blocks, just prior to going over to A+ can be identified by the extra lump on the front end of the block

Hello everyone!
Great news!! I bought na A series 1275 engine with trans for a great price! And right now I have a question. How can I know the engine nº??
There should be a plate on the engine block, right above the alternator right? But there is nothing there. Is there any other way to identify it?
In the back of the block there are some numbers... Looking to the engine from the back, in the left side it says: "28L", in middle: "309" and on the right side it says: "12G (and under it) 1279", and under that a simbol....
Hope this helps!!

I just remembered that there is a website where you can put some info from your engine and trans and it says what car it came from, year and other stuff.. I saw that website in this fórum, but I can't find.. Does anyone know what's the website I'm talking about?
Thanks once again!

if there is no plate then you will really need to take it to bits to see what is fitted.
the casting marks/numbers don't give much info as they could have been machined for any spec.

a link to the advert from where you bought it might help as could some images.

A link to the advert is useless, because it has no pics. I will try to upload some pics later

But it will give a clue as to who built it.

It's a 1275 Block, Pre-A+, possibly from a 1275 GT, though from memory, it just pre-dates the later type just before they went to A+.
