Hi,

The headlights on my 92 mini city are playing up. I've tried the obvious remedies;

Cleaned the contacts on the steering column, checked & cleaned the inline fuses & box behind the carb, inspected the switches, cleaned the connections behind the lights and in all other areas mentioned. I've cleaned any earths I've come across - related or otherwise. Wiring looks good.

Problems:

  • Full beam works with a flash of the stalks only - won't stay on
  • Main beam - only one, weak/dipped at the switch, very slow to turn on
  • Dipped doesn't work at all
  • Pushing the stalk forward does nothing
  • Instrument illumination not working
  • One rear light red light not working - not the bulb nor an obvious connection fault
  • Rear foglight doesnt work
  • (the interior light works beautifully :D )

Bulbs are fine and the mentioned areas have been cleaned upon inspection.

(Brake, reverse, hazards all fine)

Are there any other fuses?

What should I check next?

Change the switch in the dash the pins on the back heat up and move back in the plastic. Not that noticeable either to look at ! Are they halogen headlights? Or sealed beam ?

+1 for the light switch. The first thing that I had to buy when I got my Mini was a complete set of switches. They were all either dead or intermittent. I also added a whole handful of relays to take the power away from the switches. Obviously, BL thought that technical stuff like relays were only for "posh" cars.

Have ordered a set of switches and a multimeter and will keep you posted.

Ok, switches replaced.
Some good news:
Headlights now working.

Still no dial illumination
Rear light
Fog light - switch replaced - still not working
And reverse light has also given up the ghost :(
I have a multimeter now too.
Next steps?
