1986 Automatic Mini

998 engine

75500 KM

A problem that I been having recently is that when my mini is fully warmed up and I come to a complete stop the oil pressure light turns on. As soon as I hit the gas though the light goes off.

What I have done so far

changed oil and filter (10w/40 liqui moly ma2 motorcycle oil)

replaced the oil pressure sensor

Replacing the oil sensor helped a bit, but the light still come on. Would changing the oil to 15/40 help? I have notice that the mini has also been burning oil quite a bit. Any other recommendations?

Thank you

A few things here.

I'd suggest checking what the Oil Pressure actually is with a Gauge. There's two Oil Circuits for an Auto, the one for the engine runs at the lower pressure and that's the one that the Oil Switch is plugged in to and also where you should check with a Gauge. At hot idle, you'd like to see 15 PSI and running, around 50 PSI+.

If you find it's low, then check the High Pressure side (there's a test point on the Oil Filter) at 1000 rpm, in a forward gear you should get between 75 and 85 PSI and in Reverse, between 115 and 125 PSI.

If this second check is OK, then it's likely the engine is worn. If the second check is low, then it's possible the Oil Pump might be the cause, though given the mileage you have, it's likely the whole lot is tired.

I'd recommend changing out the Oil, to an ordinary Mineral Oil of 10W40 or possibly 15W40. That stuff you have in there won't be doing the gearbox any favours and could be the reason for burning so much Oil. When changing, it may need a good many miles and possibly a few changes to come good and flush that stuff from the engine.

As above, change to a 15w40 mineral oil.
It may be that whilst your engine is still running ok, it is getting older and normal wear is starting to show.
It would be a good idea to fit a pressure gauge.

Also what's your idle speed? If idle speed is super low it may flicker just raise it slightly see if it helps. The oil you have sounds garbage though as others have said.

10w40 is the correct grade for auto mini,s from 79 onwards, i use motul semi synth ,has to be ma2. made a huge difference on mine and totally erradicated the 3-4 gear flare on mine. As Mokespider said, the oil supply is split into 2 system,s the part for the engine and the part for the gearbox. Check your oil pressure first, it may just be your oil pressure releif spring (cheap fix). Have you been on the Automatic mini forum. Check it out,
