Hi;

Anyone got any tips for fitting a headlining and front and rear screens on a 1982 Saloon?

Firstly The Headlining

I fitted the headlining and started to hold it in place with the door and rear side window seals but then had problems with fitting it at the front so removed it from the door and side window seals and instead started at the front by holding it in place with the Sun Visors (The holes where already in the headlining so I knew it was correct.

Next I fitted the Courtesy light as again the holes for the screws where already in the headlining then pulled it tight on the B posts.

Now before I fit the headlining under the Door and Side Window Trim I think I should fit the Rear Screen and Windscreen as these will ensure that the Headlining is correctly in line front to rear?

I am now ready to fit the Windscreen and the Rear Window, fitting the Headlining under the Windscreen seal should not be a problem as it is already being held in place with the Sun Visors but there is very little slack at the rear screen to fold over the window ledge.

My main question is how best to hold it in place?

When I removed it there was a ton of glue holding it onto the frame of the rear window but I would like to avoid having to do that if at all possible.

I thought I may clip it in place using Dash Rail Trim clips but wasn't sure about having these under the Window Seal as I thought they may cause water ingress and rust?

I have also thought about using a small amount of contact glue on the window ledge / headlining and hold this in place with pegs or clips of some sort until set and then remove it to fit the Screen Seal?

Secondly the Windscreens

Any tips on fitting the front and rear windscreens please?

Do I fit the rubber seal to the window frame on the car first and then fit the screen or do I fit the rubber seal to the screen and then fit this to the car?

I have some Silicone Grease Spray and some in a Tube should I use this to help the screen into the seal or should I use washing up liquid (seam to recall that washing up liquid may cause deterioration to the rubber?

Once the Screen is in I understand that I then fit the insert, again should I uses Silicone Grease?

I have the tool supplied for the rubbers, is this for the screen or the insert (can't remember)

Many thanks

Just done a little Googling and found this:

http://www.newtoncom...nis-mk3-to-mk7/

This covers the Headlining.

I wasn't planning on using glue but it looks like I may have to?

Refitting a refurbished headlining looks more difficult as there is very little excess material.

I can't comment on the headlining.

In terms of the windscreen, it really is simple. FIt the rubber to the car first, then lay the screen over (it really helps with a couple of suction pads), then work the screen into the rubber, I used some spray lube and plastic levers. Then spray some lube into where the filler strip should go.

Fit the filler strip into the tool, then the tool into the channel, then push the tool along the channel and the strip should slide into place.

Do you need to put any kind of sealant between the rubber seal and the car?

No sealent needed. but use new rubbers and filler strips.

The headlining must be fitted with contact adhesive either brush on or spray. Just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.

Hang the headliner by the rods and use bulldog clips or similar to hold the edges up to the car square and then when ready to glue, start at the front pulling it tight and then above the front doors one at a time and then the rear quarter windows and then the back. You need to keep pulling it tight and use clips to hold it once the glue is on to hold it whilst it dries.

DON'T FIT SUNVISORS OR ANYTHING UNTIL THE HEADLINER IS FITTED AND TENSIONED CORRECTLY!!

Sorry but it's important to do this as you want tension to remain at the mounting points for the sunvisors etc when you fit them or it will just look saggy and baggy around them.

I have never fitted a used headlining before and i don't think i would like to as they have already been stretched and i doubt will stretch enough to go again nicely but if you aren't fussed about it being spot on, you should be able to get it pretty good.

Good luck

Ben

Thanks Ben.

Where is the best place for the fillet join (top or bottom)?

I made the fillet joint at the top?

Top is fine as long as the rubber join isn't there too (if it has one)

Found a couple of useful videos - although in one they are using a screwdriver to locate the screen!!!

I use these

A plastic filler spreader is quite good too.

I'd never use a screwdriver  O_O

No I put the rubber join (although it is glued together) at the base.

That's a handy little kit, would have save me some time. Instead I used me, my daughter (to stop the window falling out and onto the floor) and a long flat plastic tool I found on the Microwave - I think its for applying leg wax!! Anyway it did the job.

Ref the screwdriver - neither would I :-)
