So ive fitted another engine, its a 1275 A+ engine but with a normal A series clutch, flywheel, starter motor ect (basically everything under the bell housing is A series) pre verto. Its grinding when trying to select gears. Its as if the clutch isnt disengaging enough to select the gear. The weird thing is though 4th gear doesnt grind at all and most of the time neither does 2nd i can pull away fine in 2nd gear so to be that means the clutch is working fine. But 1st 3rd and reverse grind everytime they wont even select unless i seriously force it. Ive checked and adjusted throwout and checked clutch arm travel at 12.5mm. Is it likely to be the gearbox?

I think there's only just enough travel on the arm at 12.5 mm.

Try bleeding the clutch for starters.

What, you think it should travel further? Haynes says 1/2" which is about what mine is. Doubt it needs bleeding as that master cylinder worked fine on prev engine and hasnt been out.. also selects 4th fine just no other gear

Couldn'the be one of several things.
It could be:
Worn clutch arm pins.
Worn ball-end on the arm.
Incorrect clutching arm setting
Overthrowing stops not set correctly.
Insufficient arm travel. It needs to be a minimum of 0.55".

Right thank you.. theres something that does concern me when i was adjusting the throwout nuts i could rotate the whole shaft the thrust bearing sits on.. the thing that the ball of the clutch arm fits into..surly if the ball is inside that you shouldnt be able to rotate it 360deg?

The release bearing shaft which carries the overthrow stop nutrition and lock nut is presented from rotating by the engagement of the arm.
If the shaft turns then the arm is broken.
When loosening or tightening the overthrow nuts never rely on the arm to hold the shaft in place. If you do the ball end can snap off.
