Today whilst out about about in my Mini, I noticed that the red light on the dash was randomly coming on, along with the indicators not working. I wiggled around the wires underneath the dashboard and the red light would go off and the indicators would start to work again - obviously a dodgy connection.

Then when driving home on the dual carriageway, the engine lost power and when I came to a complete stop the engine cut out. Looking under the bonnet, the small wire from the coil to the distributor has popped off. This has happened once before and was just a case of putting it back on and off we go again. This time after putting it back on, it doesn't won't to start. It will continuously turn over and over but not firing it. There doesn't appear to be any power getting to the coil, and there doesn't appear to be any spark at the points.

When switching the ignition on and wiggling the cables under the dashboard, the ignition lights will flicker and sometimes going completely out. Is this all related to the wiring under the dash, or would it be coil related.

Any help appreciated as I have just put the car up for sale and have a number of people interested, but obviously cannot sell if it doesn't even start!

The car is a 1990 Mini 998cc with carb and dizzy.

If wiggling the wires makes the lights flicker back to life I guess that needs sorting first, loose connections. Wires all on coil correctly? Any fuses blown

All sorted now. I followed the wiring back from the coil through to the ignition and noticed that there was a 15A blade fuse wired in half way along the cable (don't remember Minis normally having these so I assume it has been added in at a later date.

Changed this and the car fired up after a few turns. Also hopefully sorted out the loose connection underneath the dash! All in all, a fairly easy repair!
